Training schedule and providers
Training classes are offered in-person and online. Spanish-language training is also available in-person.
Types of training
Training is required to become certified for:
- Lead-Based Paint Activities (LBPA): Includes abatement, inspections, and risk assessments
- Renovation, Repair, and Painting (RRP) Activities: Includes remodels, renovations, restorations, asbestos abatement, painting and repairs
There’s is no grace period for certifications. If you are expired, you will need to take the initial course again.
RRP training programs
Renovator training
- 8-hour class, includes 2 hours of hands-on training.
- Required every 5 years to maintain certification.
- Online refreshers are valid for 3 years and only allowed every other cycle.
- For individuals working on pre-1978 properties, HUD-funded projects or overseeing RRP work.
LBPA training programs
Inspector training
- 3-day course required to test painted surfaces or conduct clearance inspections.
- Refresher required every 3 years.
- For professionals hired to perform lead-based paint inspections using XRF or paint chip sampling methods.
- Required to test homes using XRF analyzer or paint chip sampling.
- Required to test federally funded projects for lead-based paint.
Risk assessor training
- 2-day course (following the inspector course) to test paint, dust, and soil for lead hazards.
- For initial training, state certification and exam are required.
- Refresher required every 3 years, as well as state certification.
- For professionals hired to perform risk assessments, which include testing paint, dust and soil hazards.
- Required to test before abatements or work on federally funded projects.
Supervisor training
- 4-day course for those overseeing lead abatement work.
- For initial training, state certification and exam are required.
- Refresher required every 3 years.
- For individuals supervising abatement projects or HUD RRP jobs.
Worker training
- 2-day course for those performing lead abatement.
- State certification is required after taking class.
- Refresher required every 3 years.
